Things To Do In Kuching
There are so many things you can do when travel to Kuching & I try to figure it out as many as possible for your reference:
Kayaking – Mostly organised by Kuching Kayak & other local travel agencies, you have a various options to choose where you want to kayak, such as Sarawak River (in the Kuching city), Salak River to sea at Santubong Peninsula (high chance to spot dolphin), or to kayak through the Borneo rainforest and experience the sights and sounds of the jungles of Borneo.
Dolphin Watching – Most travel agencies will organize such tour to spot the rare species of dolphin called Irrawaddy Dolphin at Salak River. Get ready with your zoom camera for a nice shot. If you join Kuching Kayak for dolphin kayak tour, you can do 2 things at same time & pay almost the same price as other travel agencies are charging for spotting the dolphin with boat, so why not Kuching Kayak!
Sarawak River Cruise – Cruise along the Sarawak river with Sarawak style boat called “Tambang”. Hire a “Tambang” from Kuching Waterfront & generally they charge RM30 per hour of cruising along Sarawak River. You get to see the Kuching city from a different perspective of view, & at the other side of Kuching city is a traditional Malay villages.
Scuba Diving – At Kuching, you can join the dive operator Kuching Scuba for a diving trip to Satang or Talang Island. It’s one of the National Park too with pristine beach & crystal clear water. Underneath the water is a beautiful coral reefs & marine life. Dive tour is only conducted during dry season around April to November only.
Jungle Trekking – There are various place to do the jungle trekking in Kuching & one of the best place to do jungle trekking is at Bako National Park. Other places such as Kubah National Park and Santubong jungle trail (start the trail from Holiday Inn Resort).
Mountain Climbing – There are several mountains near Kuching, where you can climb to the peak & back to Kuching in a day. Some of the tour agencies in Kuching offer mountain climbing trip to Gunung Gading. Other mountains you can climb are Gunung Serapi from Kubah National Park, Gunung Santubong from Santubong trail and Gunung Penrissen from Borneo Highland Resort.
Caving – The well-known cave in Kuching & with proper walkway are Fairy Cave & Wind Cave. You just need a torchlight & you can cave all the way in & out. If you are more adventurous in caving, There are many other caves where you can cave but must equip with special caving equipments. Join the trip organized by Kuching Caving, & you will never go wrong.
Snorkelling – Again the only place with coral reefs & crystal clear water you can find near Kuching are Satang & Talang Island. You can book the tour with local travel agencies or tour operators based in Kuching.
Shopping – Nowadays there are quite a number of shopping centers opened in Kuching & you can visit them & shop around whenever you have a free time in Kuching. New shopping centers include The Spring, Boulevard Mall & Green Heights Mall. Other older shopping centers are Sarawak Plaza, Tun Jugah Mall, Wisma Saberkas, Crowne Plaza Parkson Grand, Crown Square, Hock Lee Centre, Wisma Satok & Wisma Hopoh. If you would like to shop for tribal handicrafts, souvenirs, & collectibles in Kuching, Main Bazaar street is the place you don’t want to miss.
